Cleaning and organizing are tough and they have an emotional component to them as well. Set a timer for a short period of time, thirty minutes maximum, and get organizing! Mentally, knowing exactly how long you will be working helps it go by faster. It also gets you in the mindset that you won't be at it all day.

Spring is a great time to make sure all of your jewelry is in good repair and good condition. First, sell, donate, or discard anything you don’t use or love. If it doesn't make you feel good, you probably aren't going to wear it. And keep your most important pieces protected from theft with a SentrySafe Security Safe.

Closets are a space in your home that you access each and every day. When organizing a closet, first get rid of any clothes you don't love to wear, aren't comfortable in, or aren't in style or good condition. Next determine if the current system in the closet is working for you. If not, consider putting in shelves, lights, or even an entire do-it-yourself closet system.

Despite the fact that we were supposed to become a "paperless society" everyone still has piles and piles of paper everywhere. The first thing to do when sorting paper is to flip the pile over and start sorting from the bottom. The items on the bottom are the oldest, and therefore the easiest to dispose of since often times they are out dated. Be ruthless! If you can access another copy with little effort in the future, get rid of it.

Offices need to be spring cleaned too! Talk to your manager about allowing you some time during the workday to clean out the office. Having a clean and organized workspace can lead to a more productive you. When cleaning out your office ask yourself what you use daily. These items should be on your desk and everything else should be kept within reaching distance, but should not clutter your workspace.

Take the time once a week to go through old emails, and delete things you do not need. Also, don't forget to empty your sent items and deleted items. Many times our most important information and documents are stored digitally.

Chances are good that you have LOTS of keys, and you have no idea what lock they go to. This year, take the time to sort through them. Label anything you know that matches a current lock. Use tape to wrap around the top of the key and write on it with a marker.

Take the time during spring-cleaning to do all of the little things you’ve been putting off. A few things that are typically ignored until they are a problem are:

  1. Replace smoke detector batteries.
  2. Replace batteries in flashlights, and put them in an easy to access location for summer thunderstorms and power outages.
  3. Fill or replace hand soaps throughout the house.
  4. Update the first aid kit with current medications.
  5. Buy sun block, allergy medication and bug spray for the summer months.
  6. Wash window treatments.
  7. Air out throw rugs.
  8. Refill toilet paper in all bathrooms.
  9. Donate old towels and linen.
  10. Flip mattress.

Don't think that you are going to clean and organize the entire home in one day, or even in one weekend. Make a list of everything you want to accomplish, and then break the tasks down into smaller steps. Finally, schedule each activity on your calendar. By breaking each task down you know exactly where to start, and it makes getting organized less overwhelming.

If you look around your home asking what can be donated, often the answer is "nothing". However, if you give yourself a goal of filling two boxes with donations, you will be able to meet the challenge. Once you've met the challenge once, you will see a difference and can start in on your next two boxes.

We all take lots of photos, and most of us print those photos, or have them stored on memory cards. Photos make it into albums on an occasional basis, at best. Don't leave your photos lying around your home waiting to be framed or put in an album. Schedule time every month, or every few months, to put photos into physical or digital albums, and make time to replace old framed photos around the house.

If you don't know where to start organizing and spring-cleaning, start with a trash bag. Grab a big, black trash bag and walk around the house throwing things away that you don't use, don't love, or don't need anymore. These items can then be trashed or donated to charity. However, when you start with the goal of filling one container you will get the ball rolling very quickly.

You may not live in a flood zone, but a water pipe can break and basements can flood unexpectedly. Cardboard boxes don't protect against environmental damage. For important keepsakes and mementos choose the GuardianTM Storage Box.
