Need to know terms and
definitions when buying a safe

Biometric lock
Or ‘fingerprint swipe’ lock, is a lock that can be programmed to open by swiping your fingerprint.

Combination or Electronic lock with override key
Allows the safe to be opened with just the key, no need to enter a combination.

Digital Media
Are electronic media that work on digital codes, like CD’s, DVD’s, USB drives, memory cards, hard drives.

D.O.J.
Stands for Department Of Justice, and for our products, refers to the California DOJ testing of many of our security safe locks, gun safes especially.

Dual lock
Products with this type of lock system require both the combination and key to open the safe.

ETL
Formally Electrical Testing Laboratory, which is a division of Intertek Group, specializing in electrical product safety testing and performance testing. They are an independent testing and verification organization that tests to manufacturers specifications. Click here for more information.

Explosion test
Is a UL test for explosion, and means the product is subjected to a flash fire of 2000°F (1093°C) for 20 minutes without exploding.

Fire Protection Limited Reimbursement Guarantee
Provides consumers reimbursement for direct physical loss of contents caused by a fire (steel Fire-Safe® products only).See fire protection guarantee for details for this value varies by product.

Fire-Safe®
Is our sub-brand trademark for all products that pass UL and ETL fire protection tests.

Impact test
Means the product is heated to temperature according to test standards, then dropped in rubble, cooled, inverted and reheated. In order to pass the test the product must remain closed and the contents must be intact and usable.

Peril protection
Refers to the type of protection our products provide: Security, Fire, and Water.

Pyronox®
Is the brand name for the proprietary insulation that’s used in our SentrySafe Fire-Safe® safes. It is a concrete base/water mixture with special additives to enhance the fire protective nature of our products so they meet stringent UL standards.

Survivacast®
Is the brand name for the proprietary insulation that’s used in our SentrySafe Fire-Safe® chests and files. It is a concrete base/water mixture with special additives to enhance the fire protective nature of our products so they meet stringent UL standards.

UL
Stands for Underwriters Laboratories Inc., which is an independent, not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization. Click here for more information.

USB
Universal Serial Bus, is a specification to establish communication between devices and a host controller (usually personal computers).

Waterproof
Means products are ETL tested by being completely submersed, for 1 hour, in water that goes up to two inches above the uppermost surface of the chest or file. The product passes the test only if no more that .5 grams (8 drops) of water enters the safe.

Water-resistant
Means products have been ETL tested and withstood 15 minutes of 1,000 gallons of water spray as well as one hour of standing in 6 inches of water with no damage to products inside the safe.
